What Happens When You Lose or Break Your Denture?

Losing a Denture Is More Common Than You Think

Misplacing or breaking a denture happens more often than many people realise. Dentures can be accidentally dropped, damaged while cleaning, or simply misplaced during daily routines.

When this happens, many patients assume they need to go through the entire denture-making process again — which can mean multiple appointments, impressions, and waiting weeks for a replacement.

But with modern digital denture technology, that process is no longer necessary.

What To Do Immediately

If your denture breaks, don’t try to glue it back together — over-the-counter adhesives aren’t designed for denture acrylic or metal, and can make a proper repair harder. Keep any broken pieces if you can, and contact your prosthetist as soon as possible. If you’re missing teeth in the meantime, avoid very hard or sticky foods until it’s repaired.

Repair vs Replacement

A clean break or crack can often be repaired without remaking the whole denture. A denture that’s lost, badly shattered, or no longer fits well — because your mouth has changed since it was made — usually needs to be replaced.

Why a Digital Record Makes This Faster

If your original denture was made digitally, your scan is kept on file. That means a lost or badly broken denture can often be remade from your existing digital design, without booking in for a new impression appointment — which is usually the slowest part of getting a replacement.

How to Avoid Losing or Breaking a Denture

  • Store it in its case, not wrapped in tissue or a napkin — a common way dentures end up in the bin by accident
  • Clean it over a folded towel or a sink full of water, in case you drop it
  • Avoid very hot water, which can warp the denture
