At smilogy’s Sydney clinics in Edgecliff and Castle Hill, a custom dental crown is $975 per crown, and that price includes your consultation, 3D scan, the crown itself, fitting and adjustments. Across Sydney more generally, what you pay for a crown depends on the material, the lab, how much preparation the tooth needs and whether other treatment has to happen first — so it’s worth understanding exactly what a quoted price covers.
This guide explains what drives the cost of a crown, what’s included at smilogy, how health fund rebates generally work, and where temporary crowns fit in.
What is a dental crown?
A crown is a custom-made cap that covers a damaged or weakened tooth. It restores the tooth’s shape and helps protect what’s left of it. Your dentist may suggest a crown if you have:
- a cracked, chipped or worn-down tooth
- a large filling that has failed, with not enough tooth left to hold a new one (see why do i need a filling?)
- a back tooth that has had root canal treatment
- a misshapen or discoloured tooth that doesn’t match its neighbours
A crown isn’t the only option for every one of these situations. Your dentist should talk you through the alternatives, and their costs, before you decide.
What affects the cost of a dental crown in Sydney?
When you compare crown prices, you’ll often find the headline figures aren’t measuring the same thing. These are the main factors that change the final bill.
1. The crown material
Crowns can be made from different materials, including zirconia and porcelain. Each has different strengths, looks and lab costs. The right choice depends on which tooth is being crowned and how you bite. At smilogy, zirconia is the standard material, and for very front teeth where appearance matters most, your dentist may recommend porcelain instead.
2. Where and how the crown is made
Lab fees are a big part of crown pricing. Some practices charge them in addition to the dentist’s fee. smilogy crowns are digitally designed and made through an Australian laboratory partner, and there are no extra lab or material fees added to the crown price.
3. What’s bundled into the price
Some quotes cover only the crown, with the consultation, impressions, X-rays or fitting appointment billed separately. Always ask what’s included, in writing, before you start.
4. Treatment needed before the crown
If the tooth needs a root canal, a core build-up or other work first, that’s usually quoted separately. It’s often the biggest reason two people’s “crown cost” can look very different.
5. Your health fund cover
Crowns are generally classed as major dental. If your extras policy includes major dental, your fund may pay part of the cost, and your out-of-pocket gap depends on your level of cover, waiting periods and annual limits.
What’s included in a smilogy crown?
According to our dental crowns page, the $975 per crown price covers:
| Included | What it means |
|---|---|
| Consultation | Your dentist checks the tooth and talks through your options. |
| 3D scan | A digital scan of your tooth instead of impression trays. |
| Custom crown | Digitally designed to match the shape and shade of your teeth, made through an Australian lab. |
| Fitting, polishing and adjustment | Your crown is fitted and your bite is fine-tuned. |
| No extra lab or material fees | Nothing is added to the $975 for lab work or materials. |
If you need other treatment before the crown, such as a root canal or a tooth build-up, it’s explained and quoted separately before anything goes ahead. The same crown price applies at both our Edgecliff and Castle Hill clinics.
How the crown process works
- Assess: your dentist examines the tooth and confirms whether a crown is the right treatment.
- Scan and prepare: the tooth is numbed and prepared, then a 3D scan captures its exact shape.
- Make: your crown is digitally designed and made through our Australian lab partner.
- Fit: at a follow-up visit, the crown is fitted, adjusted and polished.
Most crowns are completed over two visits, and it’s usually under two weeks from scan to fit. We don’t offer same-day crowns.
Do you need a temporary crown?
Because a lab-made crown takes time to produce, there’s a gap between your preparation appointment and your fitting. Depending on the tooth, your dentist may place a temporary crown to protect it in the meantime. Whether you need one, and what to watch out for while wearing it, is covered in our article do i really need a temporary dental crown?
Health fund rebates and paying for a crown
If you have dental extras with a private health fund, we can claim on the spot through HICAPS, so you only pay the gap on the day. How much your fund contributes depends on your policy, so it’s a good idea to ask your fund what it pays for major dental before your appointment. We can give you the item numbers to check. More detail is on our private health cover and HICAPS page.
For the remaining balance, payment plan options may be available for eligible treatment. Ask at your consultation.
Questions to ask before you commit
- Is the consultation, scan and fitting included in the price?
- Are lab or material fees extra?
- Which material do you recommend for this tooth, and why?
- Does the tooth need anything else first, such as a root canal?
- What are the risks and alternatives?
Any dental treatment carries risks. Before proceeding, you may wish to seek a second opinion from an appropriately qualified health practitioner.
